Pick the material, enter measurements you can check, and get a quantity that matches how stores sell it: gallons, boxes, bags, rolls, boards, cubic yards, and tons.

Measure first, calculate second

Most bad estimates come from guessed dimensions. Before opening a calculator, sketch the project, write down units, and mark anything unusual: closets, doors, windows, slopes, curves, posts, stairs, cabinets, or old out-of-square walls.

SHOPPING QUANTITY

Round to real packages

The result should match how the material is sold. Paint rounds to gallons, flooring to boxes, mulch and concrete to bags, wallpaper to rolls, deck boards to full boards, and bulk gravel to the supplier's unit.

LIMITS

Use product labels when you can

Coverage, yield, density, roll size, box coverage, and waste are not universal. When the product page or bag label gives a better number than the default, use the product number.
