REAL PROJECT CHECK

Mulch project check

Mulch estimates are sensitive to depth. One extra inch across a big bed can add a surprising number of bags. Decide whether you are refreshing an existing bed or filling a new one before treating the result as a shopping list.

  • Use a lighter depth when old mulch is still present.
  • Keep mulch away from trunks, stems, siding, and weep holes.
  • Compare bag price against bulk delivery only after delivery fees and minimums are included.
GRAB LIST

Things you may need

A quick list for the aisle. You may already own half of it.

  • Mulch
  • Work gloves
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Garden rake
  • Landscape fabric if needed
  • Edging
  • Shovel
  • Tarp for staging bags
THE MATH

How the estimate works

The calculator uses your measurements plus ordinary unit conversions. Editable fields handle the parts that change by product: waste, coverage, bag yield, box coverage, or material density.

The buy recommendation rounds up because stores do not sell half gallons, partial boxes, or a fraction of a bag.

  • Bed length and width estimate the surface area.
  • Depth in inches controls the volume and changes the total quickly.
  • Bag size converts cubic feet into a bag count.
  • Price per bag or cubic yard estimates the shopping cost.
EXAMPLE

Example: 12 ft by 6 ft bed at 3 inches deep

A 12 ft by 6 ft bed is 72 sq ft. Three inches is 0.25 ft, so the bed needs 18 cubic feet of mulch before rounding. With 2 cubic foot bags, that is 9 bags. If the bed has curves or uneven soil, buying 10 bags is usually safer than trying to stretch 9.

DON'T SKIP

Beginner notes

  • Use about 2 inches to refresh existing beds and 3 inches for many new beds.
  • Keep mulch away from tree trunks, siding, and plant stems.
  • Bag size matters; many common bags are 2 cubic feet.
  • Break curved beds into rough rectangles so the estimate is easier to check.
AVOID THIS

Common mistakes

  • Piling mulch against tree trunks or house siding.
  • Using 4 to 6 inches when a lighter refresh is enough.
  • Forgetting to clear weeds and old debris before spreading new mulch.
  • Comparing bulk cubic-yard prices to bag prices without converting units.
NEXT

Before you buy

  • Measure each bed separately and add the totals.
  • Decide whether you are refreshing old mulch or filling a new bed.
  • Check delivery fees before assuming bulk mulch is cheaper than bags.
LIMITS

Planning estimate only

Actual material needs change with product, installation method, surface condition, layout, waste, and local requirements. For structural, permit, drainage, electrical, plumbing, or load-bearing work, get qualified local guidance.

Questions people usually ask

How deep should mulch be?

Plan on 2 to 3 inches for many beds. Too much mulch can hold moisture against stems and trunks.

How many cubic feet are in a cubic yard?

One cubic yard equals 27 cubic feet. This matters when comparing bagged mulch to bulk mulch.

Should I buy bags or bulk mulch?

Bags are convenient for small projects and cleaner storage. Bulk mulch can make sense for larger areas if delivery is affordable.

Do I need landscape fabric?

Not always. Fabric can help in some areas, but it can also collect soil and weeds on top. Use it only when it fits the bed plan.
