REAL PROJECT CHECK Gravel project check
Gravel is sold by different units depending on the supplier. Some quote tons, some quote cubic yards, and some have delivery minimums that matter more than the exact decimal result. Use the calculator to understand the size of the order before calling the yard.
- Ask the supplier whether they sell by ton, cubic yard, or bag.
- Decide whether the project needs decorative depth, a compacted base, or both.
- Check where a truck can safely dump before ordering bulk material.
GRAB LIST Things you may need
A quick list for the aisle. You may already own half of it.
- Gravel
- Landscape rake
- Tamper
- Wheelbarrow
- Shovel
- Weed barrier if needed
- Edging
- Work gloves
THE MATH How the estimate works
The calculator uses your measurements plus ordinary unit conversions. Editable fields handle the parts that change by product: waste, coverage, bag yield, box coverage, or material density.
The buy recommendation rounds up because stores do not sell half gallons, partial boxes, or a fraction of a bag.
- Length and width estimate the project area.
- Depth converts surface area into cubic feet or cubic yards.
- Density turns volume into a rough ton estimate.
- Price per ton or cubic yard gives a planning budget.
EXAMPLE Example: 20 ft path by 3 ft wide at 2 inches deep
A 20 ft by 3 ft path is 60 sq ft. Two inches is 0.167 ft, so the path needs about 10 cubic feet of gravel, or about 0.37 cubic yards. With a density near 1.4 tons per cubic yard, that is roughly 0.52 tons before rounding and delivery minimums.
DON'T SKIP Beginner notes
- Depth changes the estimate quickly, so measure carefully.
- Gravel density varies by material and moisture.
- Compact base layers separately when the project needs a stable surface.
- For drainage or foundation-adjacent projects, get local advice before ordering.
AVOID THIS Common mistakes
- Confusing decorative top depth with compacted base depth.
- Ordering by tons when the supplier quoted by cubic yard, or the reverse.
- Skipping edging on loose gravel paths.
- Forgetting that delivery minimums can matter more than the exact math on small jobs.
NEXT Before you buy
- Decide whether the project needs a base layer, top layer, or both.
- Ask the supplier what unit they sell by and what density they use.
- Check access for dump delivery before ordering bulk gravel.
